In Loving Memory of
Charles P. Angelich, Jr.
Born 1/20/1947      Died 11/16/2006
[ The Ghost in the Machine ]

Our father had many friends, both online and offline. This page is a collection of emails, comments, condolences, and bits of stuff and fluff that explain in more depth who our father was, and to give you an idea of the lives he touched just by being a decent, kind and caring man.

My father's life caused a ripple effect on the internet, it is only fitting that his passing do likewise.

Charles was for a long time, an active participant in the WIN95 online forum, which I moderate. He held strong opinions and had no hesitation to express them, which from time to time rubbed some other participants the wrong way, but he was also among the first to reach out and offer assistance when anyone else was puzzled about some aspect of personal computing.

I am sorry to hear of his death, and in a little way, share your loss.

Do I have your permission to inform other WIN95 participants of this sad news? Ideally, I would quote from your email- but only with your permission. I don't think I would want to post your email address on-line in that forum but (again) with your permission, would like to be able to share your email address with anyone wanting to express their sympathies directly to your family.

Dear Ms. Julien:

Mr. Alan Zisman informed me of the death of your father on Nov 16. I just wanted to express my sympathy to you for your loss. Although I have never met your father we corresponded via
internet news mail and email. He will be missed by all of us who were his E-friends.

May our Lord provide comfort to you and your family.

Charles Scaglione

Monique, bonjour.

I just got the sad news of your departed Dad and I must say how sorry I am.

He and I had some arguments on FIDO and I cut him off by saying that I had him twitted but I kept reading his posts anyway, he had some information to pass on.

The argument was about I being French, not actually, but I was born in Quebec and raised/educated in French and he seemed to take a shine to this. To prevent further nasties, I told him that I was cutting him off. As you said he was opinionated and hardheaded but still a friend.

Let me assure you that I am truly sorry.

I am now retired as a Captain on B767 for Air Canada. Jean.

Dear Monique,

Please accept my condolences. While I did not know your father personally, I did indeed know his work, an unselfish and appreciated
service to his fellow computer users. I will certainly revise the listing in Free Software for DOS, to reflect the changes in your father's site.

Peace to you and your family,

Hi, Monique. Dan Ceppa here....

I got the news on your fathers passing. My condolences to you.

I wasn't sure exactly what to write, but I noticed this in a follow up message:

>I'm sorry if this causes you any personal distress. My father was a
>stubborn, opiionated and very intelligent man. *smiles* We all miss him
>very much. -- Monique

That made this message a lot easier to do.

I'm sure you have a copy of this but, just in case, here's the sig line he used in the
WIN Echo:

> , ,
> o/ Charles.Angelich \o ,
> <| |> __o/
> / > USA, MI < \ __\__

Take care.

And, again, my deepest sympathy.

Dan Ceppa

NOTE: I wonder if he intended this:

     , ,
      o/ Charles.Angelich \o
     <| |>

Dear Monique,

I am sorry to hear your sad news.

I only ever correspond with webmasters if I am really impressed by their work. Charles' site is one such site.

I did not know Charles personally, but recognised a kindred spirit and a man of integrity, warmth and intelligence. He will be missed by a lot of people around the world.

Charles' websites should perhaps be frozen as they are and kept alive, both because they are useful and entertaining, and also as a memorial. I doubt if I can be any use here, but if you need any advice or help I'm an MCSE qualified professional, with interests and experience from DOS and Novell to Linux and XP. I don't actually like computers, but find the way they work interesting.

love and peace to you and your family,

Dear Monique,

I, and my wife, Arlene, wish to express our heartfelt sorrow for your
loss. Although I had never met Charles personally, I did have many
occasions to exchange email with him.

I know that the members of the Fidonet community will also be deeply
saddened by his passing and his presence will be sorely missed.

Respectfully,

Gerald Miller

I'm saddened to hear this. Charles will be missed by many whose lives he touched. If you like, I will expunge his name from the mailing lists under my control to which he may have been subscribed in order to save you any further inconvenience.

Dear Monique,

I am a Canadian Programmer, age 55, who greatly enjoyed Charles Angelich's friendship on the Fidonet International C Echo back in 2000. I have been on that list on and off since the 80's. Like Charles, I am passionate about my love of programming and we actively participated in many discussions together, sharing our knowledge and experience. He helped me greatly in a programming project that I did online to advance a natural language sorting algorithm. I too have the greatest respect for his intelligence and share many common technical values with him.

I learned this evening that we have lost Charles, while specifically seeking him-out to help me test a new program suite that I have been writing which includes DOS legacy programs from the 1980's.

I will always remember Charles, and I am sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,

DOS   W31   WFWG

When we are in trouble and need an easy to use OS to bail us out we will look for our DOS disks. DOS will be the 'ghost' in our machines. MSDOS, PCDOS, DrDOS, OpenDOS, FreeDOS and now PTSDOS have been and continue to be the work horse that maintain our machines, performs our routine tasks, and powers many 'rescue boot disks' that save our bacon. The legacy of DOS is speed and access to our hardware anytime we need that access.
