Basic Human Figure

The size of the head determines the sizes of all the other body parts of the human figure. The distance from the top of the head to the chin can be used to measure where to put all of the other body parts.

A normal person is 8 heads tall from the top of their head to the heels of their feet.

The torso (chest and stomach) is about 3 heads including the neck.

Arms are about 3 heads and legs are 4 heads.

This is correct for adults. For children the arms and legs are shorter.

A young child will have a torso, arms, and legs of only 2 heads in length using the child's head as the measurement, of course.

Lightly drawing in this stick figure can help to keep everything the proper length in proportion to the head. The two connected triangles in the shape of an "X" can help when drawing a running or a seated human figure.
