Play : "Under the Sea "

What is MIDI?

Comparatively small files that contain instructions for your soundcard to reconstruct into music and play that music on your sound system.

To determine which sound system you have installed, FM or GUS, play this MIDI file. If you do not hear what sounds like a choir singing with no musical instruments, but hear organ music instead of the choir, you have the older FM sound system or limited soundfonts. If you hear human voices you have wave table synthesis (GUS or comparable) installed. Creative 64AWE and Roalnd GS (Windows generic) should play 'human' voices using this MIDI file. That you do not have these soundcards and soundfonts does NOT mean the MIDI will not play, only that you won't hear exactly what I was hearing when I resequenced them.

GS = GUS def: Gravis Ultra Sound - individual instruments recorded playing one or more notes stored in individual files and used to reconstruct all that the instrument can produce.

TGS = TIMIDITY def: Open sourced MIDI player using GUS sound 'patch files' to reproduce the instruments.

RGS = Roland GS def: Windows default generic soundfonts supplied with newer versions of Windows.

CSB = Creative SB def: Common sound card (the 'SB' is Sound Blaster) that uses a proprietary soundfont.

If the base clicks your speakers it would mean your speakers are too small to handle the bass notes, sorry. I would suggest using even a small inexpensive set of headphones rather than not enjoy the full range of sound?

Flight of the 500 Pound Bumble Bee - Flute lead with support at various times from a pan flute. I imagined a 500 pound bumblebee chasing a normal sized one from flower to flower and then used the instruments to describe the scene. This was rushed a bit and may not play properly on other computer systems. RGS

Pink Panther - Flute lead per BEF's request. Also a bit rushed, I might be able to improve on this a bit more. Maybe Robert can load the sequencing software and tweak it a bit? RGS

There is also a song from the movie `Titanic' with a flute lead here and several others in these listings.

These MIDI files are here to give you an idea of the range of MIDI music even on a simple computer sound card. With a full MIDI hardware setup the instruments sound exactly as the real instruments and one person at the keyboard becomes a symphony orchestra.

MIDI has been used by Stevie Wonder and Prince for the production of their music and is very popular with professional musicians. Paul Schafer, the band leader on the Letterman TV show, uses a full MIDI setup for his keyboards and can duplicate the orginal background music for visiting performers to sing their recent `hit' with his accompaniment. Many of the MIDI files on the Internet are originally sequenced (programmed) by professional musicians and then re-sequenced by hobbyists (like Robert and myself). Robert resequenced `Unchained Melody' the first evening he used the software and has resequenced a dozen other MIDI files since that time. It's hard to resist hearing some of your favorite music the way you wanted to hear it but never have.

The sequencing software is very easy to learn to use with a point and click interface and bars of music as `blocks' lined up horizontally within each channel (sound track). The `Music Sculpture' that I use is very small at around 250k in size and includes an onscreen keyboard if you want to key in original tunes. It can execute from a floppy and does not `install' itself within Windows or alter any of your other software. Everything you use for sound now will remain untouched but you will have an opportunity to hear the music in ways you have always wished someone would record it for you. General MIDI uses 117 different instruments and you can chose any of them for any part of the music. I have discovered combinations I didn't know I would like until I tried them. - CPA
