| My rear tires hit the road first squealing as they had done at my command so many times before. Then the front tires touched and the steering wheel was `alive' again. You could almost say it was a `soft' landing. Just as I was going to exhale the air I had been holding inside of me, the front of the car shot up into the air as though an explosion had gone off and was tossing the car into the air. I could feel the combined force of the Pontiac accelerating under full power and something more - gravity. I was climbing a hill with the gas pedal shoved all the way down where it had frozen at the first shock of becoming airborne. Then I remembered. There was a huge gully in the road at the end of the straight-away. I had launched off one side, run to the bottom and was climbing the other side. My headlights now shining up into the night sky and the speed with which the Pontiac was accelerating up the other side of the gully created the illusion that I was now launching into the night sky. |
