Wednesday, September 10, 2003; Bill Joy (Sun Micro co-founder), the legendary scientist who has been compared to Thomas Edison for his inventions of pivotal Internet technologies and to J. Robert Oppenheimer for his personal misgivings about what he is helping to create, resigned yesterday from Sun Microsystems Inc.

"Accustomed to living with almost routine scientific breakthroughs, we have yet to come to terms with the fact that the most compelling 21st-century technologies -- robotics, genetic engineering, and nanotechnology -- pose a different threat than the technologies that have come before. Specifically, robots, engineered organisms, and nanobots share a dangerous amplifying factor: They can self-replicate. A bomb is blown up only once -- but one bot can become many, and quickly get out of control," Joy wrote under the headline "Why the future doesn't need us."

Animation (requires javascript) just for fun - not required to enjoy the music. Many of these tunes have multiple MIDI files availble to choose from. At least one, if not all, have been resequenced to play properly using MIDI wavetable synthesis. Primarilly SoundBlaster AWE64, WinGroove ($20) or TIMIDITY (free opensource) software synth emulation.
